WEAVE
Parramatta

ABOUT
Founded in 2009 in response to community request, WEAVE Parramatta was originally an experiment, then an initiative, and now a program of Parramatta Artists’ Studios.

A program of Parramatta Artists’ Studios (PAS), WEAVE is a carefully curated creative program of textiles and fibre workshops including talks, and excursions that connect culturally diverse peoples through contemporary textile art making, with a focus on contemporary practice by accessing traditional ways. We make beautiful things...but these are a byproduct - the really beautiful thing that happens is sharing, connection, storytelling, remembering and honouring in a supportive environment. We connect with contemporary fibre artists, provide opportunity for WEAVE members to platform themselves as artists and makers, remember and honour culture and traditions, learn and share techniques, activate community and support one another.
WEAVE is programmed collaboratively between a Curatorium of fibre artists, PAS and Kiri Morcombe.

KIRI’S ROLE WITH WEAVE PARRAMATTA

Kiri established WEAVE PARRAMATTA in 2009 in collaboration with PAS, after working for PAS to deliver a project with Dr. Maureen Lander as creative lead, focussing on Oceania community engagement for people living in the Parramatta LGA. The outcomes of the project included an exhibition, titled ParraMATariki, which community contributed to and a series of mat making workshops with Pacific and Māori community. After request from the community for the workshop component be ongoing, PAS engaged Kiri to regularly create, coordinate and deliver workshops, program and engage community and community lead activity. The WEAVE Curatorium is a recent and welcome development of WEAVE which brings multifaceted networks, connections, leadership and wider perceptions to the curation of the program.
